Peter Katsambanis MLA is the Member for Hillarys in the Legislative Assembly. He is the Shadow Minister for Police, Road Safety and Industrial Relations. Prior to the 2017 state election, Peter was a Member for North Metropolitan Region in the Legislative Council from 2013.
He holds Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce degrees and has been admitted to practice as a lawyer for more than 25 years. Prior to his service in the Western Australian Parliament, Peter was a Member of the Victorian Parliament from 1996 to 2002.
Peter has extensive experience in the private sector, government, small business and community groups. He has worked as a lawyer in private practice, as a tribunal member of the Refugee and Migration Review Tribunals, as a senior adviser in Federal and State Government and operated several of his own small businesses.
Peter lives in Hillarys with his wife, Karalee, and their three children, enjoying the wonderful coastal lifestyle the area has to offer. Peter is dedicated to making our local area a better place to live and providing educational and employment opportunities for everyone to maximise their potential in life.
Active in his community, Peter is a sponsor of the Whitford Cricket Club, Whitford Junior Football Club and the Sorrento Bowling Club. He is a Patron of Friends of Israel WA, Whitford Amateur Football Club and Whitford Junior Football Club and Vice Patron for Surf Life Saving Western Australia, Swimming WA and Hillarys Yacht Club. Peter is also the President of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association. Peter’s service in the community has been recognised with awards such as the National Certificate of Merit with Gold Badge from the Returned and Services League (RSL) and the Meritorious Service Medal from the Australian Red Cross.
To build a safer and better community for all Western Australians, Peter has worked to increase jail terms for serious criminal offenders including dangerous sex offenders and champions better resourcing for our Police Officers. Peter chairs the Parliamentary Community Development and Justice Standing Committee who conducted in 2018/2019 an enquiry into protection of crowded places from terrorist acts. This is the first of its kind anywhere in Australia.
Peter is a passionate advocate for small business. From his own personal experience, he understands the hard work and dedication it takes to run a small business. Peter continues to fight for less red tape, lower taxes for local business and the abolition of the payroll tax. He also recognises the strong contribution to our society made by seniors and believes they should be given stamp duty relief when downsizing their family home.
Peter has also worked tirelessly to get Western Australia a fairer share of GST revenue, which will allow us to build the infrastructure our area deserves and reduce taxes and charges in the future. Peter stands up for the issues that matter to his local community and is already delivering results for a better future for us all.
