Who is George Christensen
George Christensen is an Australian Member of Parliament who serves the Dawson electorate in North Queensland which stretches north from Mackay through to the southern suburbs of Townsville.
BACKGROUND: George joined the Young Nationals at the age of 15. He went on to hold the position of state president of that organisation in 2003-4, and was Mackay zone vice-president of The Nationals in 2007-8.
George also worked as an electorate officer and press secretary for former Nationals Member for Dawson De-Anne Kelly for three years.
With a degree in journalism and practical experience at a community newspaper in Mackay under his belt, George went on to found his own successful publishing business which produced two other community newspapers for the Walkerston and Northern Beaches communities.
He spent six years as a councillor, firstly on the Mackay City Council, and then the Mackay Regional Council following amalgamation, where he developed a reputation as a man who would fight for a fairer outcome for ratepayers.
IN PARLIAMENT: George is serving his third term as the Member for Dawson, a diverse Queensland coastal electorate which stretches from the city of Mackay north through the regions of the Whitsundays, Bowen, the Burdekin and the southern suburbs of Townsville.
George was first elected in 2010, was re-elected in 2013 with an increased majority and retained the city in 2016 despite a fierce campaign waged by green activists and unions.
In 2013 he was also elected deputy National Party Whip, and in 2016 took on the role of Nationals Chief Whip. However, in February 2017 he made the tough decision to quit from the role of party disciplinarian so that he would not be constrained when fighting on issues that affected his electorate.
He has held a number of committee roles within the Parliament with focuses on Northern Australia, industry, agriculture and social policy.
