Calum Thwaites

Live at LibertyFest

Calum was one of the seven students sued under section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act in the infamous QUT case.

Calum was halfway through a teaching degree at QUT when his life was forever changed when informed that a Facebook account in his name had been used to write an offensive word on another QUT students Facebook page. Having been forced to abandon his studies towards a career as a high school teacher, he is now studying a Bachelor of Laws whilst also working as a legal associate. Calum will share his story of the three-year legal saga, battles with the Human Rights Commission and QUT and its then employee Cindy Prior. He will reflect on how his life has changed, what he has learnt about liberty and what should be changed to ensure his circumstances are never repeated.
